House on Haunted Hill revolves around a group of strangers who accepted a deal to receive $1 million each if they survive the night in an abandoned asylum name Vannacutt Psychiatric Institute for the Criminally Insane. The special effects were impressive, fantastic set designs the setting was perfect, and the special effects were spooky as the vengeful spirits start claiming lives while scaring the pants out of everyone else. Director William Malone ( Feardotcom (2002), Creature (1985), Scared to (1980)) did an excellent job executing this film.

House on Haunted Hill got all the right elements to make this movie entertaining. More on that tomorrow.House on Haunted Hill (1999) is a 1h 33-min Rated R American horror film and is a remake of the House on Haunted Hill (1959) which was directed by William Castle. Geoffrey Rush subbed in as the Price character in the remake, saving me the trouble of a birthday wish that year.īy what I assume is a coincidence, "House on Haunted Hill" hit theaters the very same year a book with an almost identical title published and, four years later, yielded a film with a very similar story but an entirely more classy approach. It's actually an okay movie in its own right, although it shits the bed in the final act and doesn't have nearly the same spirit of fun and winking ambiguity about whether the house is really haunted or not. Like "13 Ghosts," this one got a remake 40 years later, produced by daughter Terry Castle. Look, his biography says the guy had to mortgage his house to afford "Rosemary's Baby," you've got to tighten the belt somewhere. Turns out all this meant was dangling a plastic skeleton over the theater at a key moment. If you know anything about Castle, it's obvious right away that Price's character Frederick Loren is Castle's ideal alter ego, a carnival showman with a macabre sense of humor and limitless resources for screwing with people.Ĭastle did attach a gimmick to "House on Haunted Hill" which he called "Emergo," in which "real spooks" would pop out of the screen and scare the audience. I'm not even kidding, find me a sufficiently haunted dump for rent and we can get this thing started.Īnyway, "House on Haunted Hill" is not your usual ghost house flick, preferring tongue in cheek whimsy to most earnest attempst at scaring. Although the fact that I go around saying things like that is probably part of the reason nobody offers.įor the record, crowdfunding a similar haunted house dare is on my bucket list.

That was a lot more money back then, of course, but I'd take that action just for $10K in today's currency. Anyone who makes it until dawn gets $10,000. Price plays an eccentric millionaire who dares a group of strangers to stay the night in his haunted house. The best project that's really his was 1959's "House on Haunted Hill," starring Vincent Price at maximum Vincent Priceness, so much that he almost blows a hole in the fourth dimension and turns into a Vincent Price impersonator instead. If you asked, I'd have to say that William Castle's best movie is technically "Rosemary's Baby," which he produced after buying the film rights before book even published.īut that's only his movie on paper. (Every day in October I'm watching a different haunted house movie.
